Technology may also create a new kind of inequality- Kiran Karnik

‘‘Looking at the aspects of technology like
genetically designed babies, it can be imagined having people who
possess some superhuman like qualities in future. But this may lead to
a different kind of inequality as the richer will become smarter or
look good with the help of technology. This can create a new kind of
cast system,’’ Said Kiran Karnik, Former Director, ISRO and Former
President, NASSCOM, in an event organized by Pune International Centre
(PIC) today.

In the event that took place in COEP, a book named ‘evolution :
Decoding India’s Disruptive Tech Story’ written by Karnik was
unveiled. Dr. Anand Deshpande, Founder, Chairman and MD, Persistent
Systems, Pradeep Bhargava, President, MCCIA, Prof. Sangeeta Kale,
Member, PIC and Prashant Girbane, Honorary Director, PIC were present
among the dignitaries for the event.

After the book release, Anand Deshpande conducted interaction with Kiran Karnik.

Technology has created wonders, but has created problems too like the
nuclear war and climate change, said Karnik. ‘‘Thinking about the
ultimate solution to some problems, human species may move to some
other planet in future. Or just like the developed countries push
their polluting stuff to underdeveloped countries, humans can move all
the polluting industry to some other planet and earth can become
cleaner again! ’’

In the future, rather than humans and robots coexisting, there is a
possibility of them to become One at some point and the philosophical
question of self identity may arise, Said Karnik.

Karnik said that he has tried to touch the aspects like advancements
in Education, Health and Banking & Finance and its impact on the
society and also on the attitude, behavior and culture. The book also
talks about India’s achievements in the field of Atomic Energy, Space
and IT which are recognized worldwide and emerging sectors like
Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Data Analytics, Genetics and
Biotechnology.
