This weekend, Punekars will get a chance to watch some unique films on dance at the ‘Sanchari Film Festival’. The festival in its third year will be organized by Kalavardhini Charitable Trust and Loud Applause Dance Magazine in association with National Film Archives of India (NFAI) and will be held on Saturday, March 14 and Sunday March 15, 2020 at NFAI, Law College Road, Pune. The timings for the festival will be from 11 AM onwards on Saturday and 10 AM onwards on Sunday. The entry to the festival is free for all with pre-registration.
The festival will be inaugurated at the hands of Iravati Harshe, renowned television and film actress and a trained Bharatanatyam dancer on Saturday, March 14 at 11 AM. It will showcase some rare films and documentaries about various aspects of dance and dancers over the globe, their choreographic work and thought process.
“The objective of organizing such a festival of dance is to create awareness among young dancers and the new generation of artists about different aspects of dance film making, the need for documentation and motivate them to watch and learn from them. The young dancers will get in-depth vision on what to focus while watching dance films, how to ‘film’ dance, how not to present dance in films among other information. This year we have films from across the border too so it will indeed be a treat for all dance lovers,” said Neha Muthiyan, organizer of the event.
Arundhati Patwardhan, Bharatnatyam dancer and Secretary of Kalavardhini Charitable Trust said, “Not only amateur dancers but students who are into film direction will benefit from this Dance Film Festival.”
On Saturday, the festival will screen film ‘His Father’s Voice’, directed by Kaarthikeyan Kirubhakaran as its opening movie. The film is a social drama about a gifted male dancer separated from his musician father in childhood who must return to him, to be able to dance again. It gives a look at the spiritual quest behind dance and music in the Indian culture.
It will be followed by a Marathi movie- ‘Eka Swapnacha Pravas’. Following that, a movie called ‘Dancing Shoes’ will be screened. The first day of the festival will conclude with the screening of the film, ‘The Thinking Body’ which treats the subjects of the art, dance, and its implicit psychology in the context of the Indian culture.
On Sunday, March 15, a short film called ‘Sharira- Chandralekha’s Explorations will be shown at 10 AM. Later, the movie ‘Disha’ will be shown, which will be followed by a feature film called ‘Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje’ will be screened. After that, a film ‘Pravahi’ will be screened and it will be followed by a film ‘Lasyam’.
The festival will conclude with a documentary film ‘Why Do We Dance’ directed by Marco Pianigiani, which will take the viewers on a global journey through the most dynamic, seductive and influential dance forms of our time.
