On the occasion of its 9th anniversary, Mpower, a unit of the Aditya Birla Education Trust and a leading mental wellness provider, today unveiled a comprehensive analysis of over 100,000 mental health calls received nationally through its toll-free helpline, Mpower 1-on-1 Let’s Talk (1800-120-820050). Pune emerged as a significant contributor, ranking highest in call volume received across India. Notably, the city showcased a unique gender distribution, with 57% of male and 43% of female callers seeking support – a trend that highlights a growing openness to mental health counselling among men in Pune.
Key findings reveal that Relationship issues are a major concern in Pune, accounting for 32% of all calls. Anxiety follows closely at 26%, a unique trend observed in Pune compared to national data. This heightened anxiety is likely attributed to the city’s fast-paced urban environment, characterized by competitive academic and professional pressures, and a high-pressure lifestyle.”
Pune also exhibits a distinct profile compared to national trends. A significant 51% of callers in Pune belong to the 18-25 age group, emphasizing the urgent need for mental health support among young adults. This aligns with the World Health Organization’s findings on the significant impact of undetected mental health issues on young adults’ quality of life and economic contribution.
“Pune’s focus on education and a highly competitive professional environment can significantly impact mental well-being,” says Dr. Sneha Arya, Pune-based Psychiatrist at Mpower the Centre, Pune at BK Birla Hospital. “Increased awareness and accessible mental health resources, particularly for young adults, are crucial. Early intervention can significantly improve their overall well-being and productivity.”
